The invention discloses a novel polysaccharide gel water retaining and slow release fertilizer and relates to the technical field of slow release fertilizers. The fertilizer consists of fertilizer particles and film covered water retaining and slow release layers covering on the surfaces of the fertilizer surfaces, wherein materials for forming the film covered water retaining and slow release layers comprise tamarindus polysaccharide and plant polysaccharide, and the plant polysaccharide is in crosslinking with the tamarindus polysaccharide and is one or several materials in starch, soluble cellulose, guar gum and konjac polysaccharide. A high molecular gel reticular structure formed by the pure nature plant polysaccharide is used for building a slow release system, so the novel polysaccharide gel water retaining and slow release fertilizer integrating the water retaining and the slow and controlled release is obtained, and the fertilizer has the advantages that stronger water absorption and water retaining performance, the nutrient loss is little, nontoxicity is realized, the biodegradable and environment-friendly effects are realized, and the like. The novel polysaccharide gel water retaining and slow release fertilizer particularly has good market prospects in regions of drought, water lack or regions with great daily evaporation capacity.
