A generalized polynomial estimation of P‐P and P‐SV AVO coefficients

As multi-component seismic surveys become more prevalent, it would be advantageous to apply consistent analysis methods to both P-P and P-SV datasets. Traditional P-wave AVO studies employ a linearized twoterm approximation of the Zoeppritz equations in order to extract a constant and the coefficient for a sin term via linear regression. No such linear convenience exists for converted-wave AVO studies, where an analogue approximation contains a sin and a sin term. (Ramos & Castagna, 2001) Since this P-SV AVO equation cannot be readily transformed for linear regression, a polynomial fit must be employed. A generalized AVO equation is proposed of the form:
