A variety of respiratory irritants, including cigarette smoke and acrolein, act through nasopharyngeal or laryngeal receptors to increase upper airway resistance, decrease respiration rate, and decrease tidal volume without noticeably affecting lung resistance and compliance in the guinea pig.
