Haemato-biochemical studies in ganjam sheep of odisha reared under grazing system

2013
Thirty-five flocks of Ganjam sheep reared under grazing system were selected for the study. The haematological and biochemical constituents and serum enzyme activities were estimated in different sex and age groups. The mean haemoglobin values varied significantly from 12.17±0.15 (males) to 11.46±0.09 g% (females). The mean packed cell volume in male and female were 38.73±0.43 and 39.04±0.44%, respectively. The mean total leucocytes counts were ranged from 8.72±0.24 (male) to 8.53±0.17 thousands/mm3, respectively. The total leucocytes count increased significantly (P<0.05) with increase in the age in both the sexes. The mean blood glucose contents in males and females were 45.95±1.65 and 55.17±1.77 mg%, respectively. The mean serum albumin: globulin ratio varied from 1.23 ±0.03 in males to 1.24±0.02 in females. Significant difference in albumin: globulin ratio was observed between different age groups. The mean serum creatinine values in males and females were 1.66±0.09 and 1.85±0.06 mg/100ml, respectively. The mean serum urea concentrations in males and females were 14.71±0.53 and 15.62±0.65 mg/100ml, respectively. The mean serum aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase and alkaline phosphatase concentration in males and females were 42.86±0.69 and 34.84±0.62, 6.29±0.18 and 2.93±0.13 and 6.53±0.25 and 6.76±0.23IU/I, respectively.
