Synthesis, characterization and formation mechanisms of nanocrystalline akermanite powder

2021
Abstract Pure nanocrystalline akermanite was successfully synthesized by mechanical activation and heat treatment of talc, calcium carbonate, and silicate. Powders were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), x-ray diffractometry (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The formation mechanism was studied in depth. These results showed that akermanite was produced by the formation and consumption of transitionary compounds such as enstatite, wollastonite, larnite, and merwinite. Pure akermanite was synthesized with a crystalline size of 34 nm after ball milling for 20 h and subsequent heat treatment at 900 °C for 1 h.
