Combustion Scaling and Modeling Gas Mixing Data in NRL 5000-Liter Facility with Flow Obstacle

1982
Abstract : Gas mixing rates were studied in a 5000-liter cylindrical tank during pressurization from 1 to 2 atmospheres by observation of gas temperatures with 13 thermocouple probes. Tests were performed with different nozzle arrangements. One rectangular obstacle, 46 x 46 x 100 cm (18 x 18 x 39-1/2 in.) was used to impede gas flow and mixing in the chamber. Instantaneous pressurant concentrations were inferred from temperature measurements. Data are reported from three nonfire conditions where dry air was used as both the resident and pressurant gases. Pressurant deviation statistics indicate that adequate mixing is accomplished within one and one half dumping times following pressurization for all configurations studied.
