Pudong Syndromic Surveillance and Early Warning System During the EXPO 2010, Shanghai

2017
To timely and effectively detect any potential infectious disease outbreaks or bioterrorism events for public health protection during the 41st World Expo (EXPO 2010), Pudong Syndromic Surveillance and Early-Warning System (PD-SEWS) was established in Pudong New Area, Shanghai city. Multisource prediagnosis data including the outpatients' chief complaints, absenteeism of kindergartens and schools, over-the-counter (OTC) product sales, and health-related information of hotels’ guests were collected and analyzed daily by Poisson cumulative sum (CUSUM) model automatically. During a surveillance period of 184 days from May 1 to Oct. 31, 2010, 11 infectious disease outbreaks were identified and controlled timely by PD-SEWS, effectively contributing to the security of public health during EXPO 2010.
