The Arrowhead Trails Highway: CALIFORNIA'S PREDECESSOR TO INTERSTATE 15

1999
California promoters of a highway directly from southern California to southern Utah first contacted interested counterparts in Utah, they talked of following the southern route previously taken by the early Mormon pioneers traveling toward the Pacific Coast. Apparently a few automobiles ventured over the middle segment ofthat route until a better roadway was marked out which rather closely followed the decade-old San Pedro, Los Angeles and Salt Lake City Railroad line. However, the new roadway did follow the pioneer route on more than half its' course at each end. The process of establishing this important highway reveals some interesting parallels and contrasts with earlier pioneering ventures through the same region.1
