An insert for a drill bit is formed from diamond particles impregnated in a metal carbide matrix material. The diamond particles have a contiguity of 15%or less. The diamond particles can be of two different sizes and the metal carbide may include tungsten carbide, cast tungsten carbide, or sintered tungsten carbide-cobalt.
