Propylene Glycol as a Fire Smoke Simulant.

Abstract : Attempts are under way to find a safe fire smoke simulant to be used in various types of fire trainers/simulators. Organic aerosol fogs have been suggested as a substitute for real smoke. Stabilized propylene glycol was subjected to thermal and fire stress in ventilated and unventilated chambers. Carbon monoxide produced from the decomposition of the smoke simulant reached 0.8% under some conditions. Chamber temperatures above 66 C (150F) nearly eliminates the ability to produce smoke.
