Reinforcement Effect of Broken Stone Fills Under Dynamic Consolidation

2012
This paper studies the reinforcement effect of broken stone fills. The in-situ tests measured the acceleration of a high fill airport under dynamic compaction. Settlements caused by a compact energy of 200tm and 300tm were also obtained. A new numerical simulation method based on the display dynamic finite element method is carried out. According to the data measured by in-situ tests, the mechanical characteristics of the broken stone fills used for numerical simulation, such as modulus of elasticity, cohesion, and harden curve, were deducted. The acceleration and settlement of broken stone fills under compaction with different energy and momentum were calculated. With all of this information the reinforcement effect can be evaluated and the consolidation technique method can be optimized. The results show that there is no significant relationship between the dynamic compaction number reaching the stable settlement and compact energy. When the compact energy is the same, compaction with a heavier hammer is better than compaction with a lighter hammer.
