Video-enhanced feedback

2020
Technology-enhanced feedback to students comes in many forms now that technology has become immersed in all aspects of the educational process. Higher education institutions are criticized by students for the poor feedback practice (Boud and Molloy 2013), yet they, like other educational organizations, have access to video-enhanced feedback through the use of mobile devices. This chapter describes how video captured on mobile devices can play a part in a video-enhanced feedback process. The chapter is organized in three sections. First, video feedback in schools and higher education, then the processes employed in video-enhanced feedback, and finally the management issues related to the use of video to enhance feedback. Video capture technologies are now readily available and have a broad acceptance among students and are accessible to educators worldwide. This chapter describes the use of video-enhanced feedback to build on the idea that it offers a richer format than audio and written feedback alone (McCarthy 2015). This has implications for practitioner across all contexts of education. In addition, this chapter focuses on the use of video in the feedback process because feedback has been clearly identified as having an impact on educational outcomes (Hattie and Timperley 2007) across all sectors. There are different forms of technology that are being implemented and made available to educators across the sectors, and mobile devices are becoming part of strategic planning in some jurisdictions and context.
