Introduction: Building the 21st Century Workforce: Creating a National Strategy

The transportation industry is facing a workforce crisis. The ongoing and emerging transportation system needs people with skills in management, administration, policy, planning, engineering, construction, operations, and maintenance. The Transportation Research Board (TRB) Transportation Education and Training Committee is coordinating efforts to establish a community to keep workforce development in focus. These efforts are discussed in this article by the committee cochairs.
