An Innovative Passive Indoor Localization and Navigation Approach

2019
This paper describes the development of a system that can guide and assist people in places like malls, museums, etc. This can be achieved by using RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indicator) triangulation technology. By using this technology, the precise location of a person can be known which can then be used to guide them and provide them with information about that place. The system includes Wi-Fi routers installed at various locations of the site and an application that will display the information about every sub-site in it. The Wi-Fi routers are placed at fixed locations. At any given point in the site, the signal strength reaching from at least three Wi-Fi routers (nearing to the location of the person) is used to calculate the exact location of that point. For attaining the information about the orientation, the system has inbuilt compass functionality to give users the best experience ever so that they can just point at something and receive information about it. This system also includes voice-assistance that serves facile navigation. The performance of this system was tested at various locations and has been evaluated in terms of accuracy, range, complexity, scalability, and cost.
