Since the dawn of distributed computing, there have been many different protocols designed to help disparate systems communicate and interoperate. Some were proprietary, while others were developed through industrial standards bodies. The latter are programming language agnostic but are often slow to develop as they generally consist of members that are otherwise competitors. Older protocols involved heavy use of markup languages, and many popular frameworks required developers to generate client stubs for marshaling data.
