Review of Control Methods in Grid-Connected PV and Energy Storage System

2021
This paper presents a comprehensive review of the present control techniques used in integrated grid-tied PV and Energy Storage (ES) system. With the recent exponential increase in PV deployment, coupled with continuing cost decline of battery technology, integration of ES to the grid has become prevailing, and in many places is a mandate. In this paper, we will provide an overall review of the current state-of-art of the PV smoothing techniques, microgrid (MG) control with conventional converters and novel multiport converters in terms of battery energy management and different grid operation modes. In addition, a summary of these control methods with merits, demerits, and future research directions is presented. Finally, emerging grid-forming control methods for future grid comprising of numerous distributed energy resources are also discussed.
