The Traveler With HIV

2019
Abstract Persons living with HIV in the era of antiretroviral therapy have an increased quality of life and are therefore more able to travel. In recent years, most countries have suspended travel restrictions for HIV-infected travelers increasing the breadth of travel opportunities and the exposure risks to infectious diseases. HIV travelers with reconstituted immune systems on antiretroviral therapy share practically the same risk profile as immunocompetent travelers, but those with advanced immunosuppression continue to have higher morbidity and mortality from infectious diseases. The degree of immunosuppression impacts on response to vaccines and, in general, live vaccines are contraindicated in HIV-infected travelers with CD4 counts
