A COUPLED MODEL FOR HIGHLY ACCURATE CALCULATION OF STORM SURGE OCCURRING IN INNER BAY

2011
Storm surges occurring in inner bays are strongly influenced by inflow rates of seawater from offshore and sea surface winds affected by complicated coastlines and landforms surrounding inner bays. A coupled model that employs the ocean model CCM with a multi-sigma coordinate system and a meteorological model MM5 performing 4DDABS was developed for accurate reproduction of the inflow rates of seawater from offshore and the sea surface winds. Its validity and utility were verified by comparing the observed results of the storm surge in Ise Bay generated by typhoon MELOR (2009) with the computed results. Results demonstrated that tidal levels calculated with the coupled model agree well with those observed at all locations in Ise Bay.
