The effect of surrounding buildings’ height and the width of the street on a building’s energy consumption

The arrangement of adjacent buildings is a key point in the energy consumption of a building, particularly their number of floors and the width of streets. In the present study, these two factors are considered as variables in a base building in Tehran. They are studied in different settings, and the energy consumption associated with each setting is analyzed by simulations in HoneyBee and Grasshopper. Results are compared using Colibri and through the Design Explorer website. Results show when the height of the surrounding buildings is more than base building, energy consumption is significantly compromised. Moreover, when the adjacent buildings have the same number of floors as the base building and the width of the street in the south of the building is 14.5 m, the optimal result is achieved and energy consumption is reduced by 14.13% compared to the initial state.
