FRANCHISING IN THE GHETTO

1969
"In practical terms, what the rebels are revolting against is their lack of control over their own lives. They feel purchased, possessed, and exploited. The houses, stores and institutions are owned by others. They lack the economic and political leverages to effect change. They lack self-determination. They see their community as being akin to a colony. Theirs is a colonial revolt. It is revolt against economic, cultural and social imperialism. Hence the slogan Black Power becomes all the more meaningful, as an aspiration and a goal."2
