Natural disasters linked to climate change

2021
Abstract The impacts of climate change are unequivocal. The aim is to provide a comprehensive overview of risks associated with natural disasters driven by changes in climate extremes. The occurrence of a single extreme event or multiple extreme events may lead to a catastrophic disaster; thus, it is essential to understand the changes in climate extremes to qualifying future risks from these events. The climate event types discussed here are temperature extremes (heatwaves and cold waves), bushfires, sea-level changes, rainfall extremes (extreme wet events and droughts), floods, and compound events (where more than one extreme event occur at once leading to a disaster). A state-of-the-art assessment of existing literature on the future projections of climate extremes and associated natural disaster is included here. Lastly, critical knowledge gaps are summarized.
