Isolation of Triterpenes and Bioassay of Fractions from Roots of the (Wall. ex M.A. Lawson) Cufodontis

2013
2 Abstract: The focus of this study is to isolate chemical constituents and to study the phytotoxic, cytotoxic, antibacterial and antifungal activities of the different crude fractions from Maytenus royleanus roots methanolic extract. As a result of which compounds 1 and 2 were isolated for the first time and their structures have been elucidated through spectroscopic techniques; 1D and 2D (including HMQC, HMBC, COSY and NOESY) experiments. All fractions showed no antifungal activity but have shown significant phytotoxic, cytotoxic at high dose. The antibacterial result of all the fractions showed that not a specific bacterial strain was susceptible, but different strains were susceptible to more than one fraction at different extent. The in-vitro bioassay of the different roots fractions showed Maytenus royleanus as important source of bioactive secondary metabolites.
