Changes in health and family planning practice and demographic trends Mojokerto East Java 1974 - 1978.

1986
This report analyzes the results of 2 surveys conducted in 1975 and 1978 in Mojokerto East Java on health practices and contraceptive usage among women of reproductive age. The average time between pregnancies increased from 3.2 to 3.9 years and the proportion of women who obtained medical care during pregnancy rose from 44% to 59% between 1975 and 1978--a period in which an integrated maternal-child health/family planning program was implemented. In addition contraceptive use among ever-married women rose from 32% in 1975 to 37% in 1978 and understanding of the purpose of family planning increased from 64% to 81% of survey respondents. Ideal family size decreased from 4.0 to 3.7 between the 2 surveys. Health personnel were cited as the major source of information about contraception in both surveys. The total fertility rate in Mojokerto declined by 30% between 1967-70 and 1975-78 largely as a result of decreases in the 25-29 and 40-44-year age groups associated with contraceptive usage. The survey data suggest that the fertility decline in Mojokerto occurred later than that in East Java as a whole but this could be a reflection of differing survey methodologies.
