Evaluation of Postoperative Sensitivity in Class II Composite Restorations Using Total-Etch and Self-Etch Adhesives

2014
Aim: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the postoperative sensitivity using total and self-etch adhesives. Materials and Method: 45 patients with moderately deep proximal caries in first or second maxillary premolars were selected. Each participant was given a detailed explanation regarding the nature of the treatment. Patients were randomly divided into three groups of 15 each and the following adhesives were used. Group I: Total Etch Group II: Two components Self Etch and Group III: Single component Self Etch. The restorations were incrementally filled with Nano-Ceramic composite restorative material. Results: The data were statistically analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis test. At preoperative higher mean Visual Analog Scale (VAS) was recorded in Group 3. The difference in mean VAS between the groups was not statistically significant. At postoperative higher mean VAS was recorded in group 1 followed by group II and group III. The difference in mean VAS between the groups was found to be statistically significant. In comparison between pre and postoperative levels at one week subjects in group III and group II reported significantly less sensitivity to VAS compared to subjects in group I.
