High Dietary Magnesium and Thiazide Administration in the Prevention of Calcium-Oxalate Stone Formation in an Experimental Model

1989
The usefulness of magnesium (1–4) or thiazide (5–7) alone in the treatment of urolithiasis has been well examined. The simultaneous administration of magnesium and thiazide to prevent recurrence of stone, however, has not been investigated. The use of a combination of magnesium and thiazide in the prevention of calcium stones is theoretically attractive. Magnesium inhibits the crystallization process while thiazide counteracts the undesirable hypercalciuric effect of magnesium, thus minimizing urine supersaturation with calcium. The aim of the present study was to examine the effects of a combined magnesium and thiazide therapy on urinary calcium, magnesium, and oxalate excretion.
