Effect of celery on fertility of mice and growth and development of fetus
2009
Objective To explore the effect of celery on the reproductive capacity of male mice and the growth and development of fetus. Methods 160 healthy adult male SPF mice of Kunming strain were divided randomly into 7 days and 56 days time groups. Each group was divided into 4 groups including control group,low-dose group,middle-dose group and high-dose group according to the body weight.Mice of each group were administered by gavage at a certain time every day, control group with 0.3 mililiters of normal saline and experimental groups with 0.3 mililiters of celery juice of different concentration. After intragastric administration, male mice were mated 1:1 with untreated females for 7 days(time for completion of one estrous cycle in mice). The daily vaginal smears were checked. The day that vaginal plug was found was considered day 0 of gestation.and then the male and female mice were separated into different cages. The fetal mice were obtained by caesarean on day 18 of gestation. The pregnant rate, embryonic nidation of each group and the length and weight of fetus were recorded. Results There were not statistical significances in pregnant rate of female mice, number of embryonic nidation,or length and weight of fetus among any group(P0.05).Conclusion Celery had no significant effect on growth and development of fetal mice, but the effect on reproductive capacity of male mice can not be excluded.
