The potential for petrochemicals development in New Zealand

1977
The results of an interdepartmental study on the potential for petrochemicals manufacture in New Zealand, based on Maui gas as a feedstock, are outlined in broad terms. Alternative products and process configurations are discussed and developments based on either ammonia/urea or chemical methanol are identified as economically the most attractive. The dilemma presented by competition with the energy sector for feedstock is examined. Although aspects of the problem are outlined no firm formula for the solution of the problem is offered.
