Rare-earth contained Mg-Al alloy and its smelting technology

2006
The present invention is one kind of RE-containing Mg-Al alloy and its smelting process. The RE-containing Mg-Al alloy contains Al 1-6 wt%, Zn 0.6-2 wt%, Ce 0.1-2 wt%, Fe not more than 0.010 wt% and Ni less than 0.001 wt%, except Mg. The smelting process includes the steps of: heating pure Mg in a crucible smelting furnace to 700-750 deg.c, adding Al ingot and Zn ingot, adding Mg-Ce intermediate alloy at 690-740 deg.c, stirring before stilling for 10-40 min, and casting at 680-740 deg.c to obtain RE-containing Mg-Al alloy ingot. During the smelting, the melt is protected with gas material of SF6, CO2 and compressed air. The smelting process is simple, and the produced RE-containing Mg-Al alloy has high quality, low impurity content and fine cast crystal grain.
