Principles of Smile Reanimation

2021
Reanimation of the paralyzed face is a challenge for both the patient and the surgeon. The best results of reconstructive surgery for this purpose follow careful consideration of the patient’s needs. A key goal of reconstruction in long-lasting facial paralysis is smile restoration. In this chapter, the authors describe the evolution of the human smile, the sociocultural differences and implications of smiling, the types of smiles, and the general aspects to be considered in planning smile reanimation in long-standing facial paralysis.
