MODIS-Based Estimation of Forest Biomass in Northeast China

With RS-based methods, forest cover, biomass density, total biomass amount and their distribution in northeast China are systematically discussed, with the support of cumulative NDVI composite from MODIS data at 1km resolution during growing season in 2003. In the study area, forest owns highly live biomass amount, and is a huge carbon sink, forest covers more than 36% of the total area, biomass reaches 80 Mg/hm~2, and the total biomass stock is 2.34109Mg. Forest biomass decreases from Changbai mountain to Daxinganling mountain and Songliao plain. The result shows that RS-based methods provide effective approaches for regular dynamic monitoring of forest biomass at regional scales.
