Closure with multi-function resin liner

1992
A container closure comprises a closure shell 2 and a resin liner 7 containing a disoxidation agent, the surface of the liner which faces the container contents being roughened to increase its surface area and thus the rate of reaction between the disoxidation agent and the oxygen. The liner may be laminated and may comprise a cushioning layer, applied in molten form, adjacent the closure shell and an axially inner layer containing the disoxidation agent. Other additives, such as a drying agent, a deodorant, an anti bacterial agent, may be added to the inner layer which can be formed as a disc and placed on the molten cushioning layer and pressed by a mould into the closure shell. The closure shell, which may have an internal coating (20, Figure 3), may be of metal or plastics material and may be a crown cap, a screw cap, a pilfer proof cap or an easy open cap with tab. The disoxidation agent may be provided over only the central portion of the liner (7, Figure 1C), the central portion being also roughened. The rough surface may be covered with an oxygen permeable resin coating to prevent elution (9, Figure 2B). The container may contain orange juice.
