Entre a África e a América: escravismo e tráfico de escravos na formação do Brasil (1530-1850)

2020
Part of the dossier “Atlantic: Transits, Memories and Perspectives” – which, based on discussions in the graduate courses at Escola da Cidade, poses questions for the critical debate of past, present and future relations between America, Africa and Iberian Peninsula – the essay retrieves fundamental information about the trafficking of slaves coming to Brazil between 1530 and 1850. Departing from the division of the period in seven moments that mark specific dynamics of the transatlantic slave trade, it argues that throughout the 19th century and even after the first measures to ban trafficking, there is, in reality, an increase in the volume of slaves coming, even if illegally.
