Anaerobic Treatment of Excrements from Large-Scale Animal Farms

1991
Abstract The methanogenic digestion of poultry manure is used as a model of waste management resulting in large-scale animal farms. The fermentation process takes away about 40 % of the COD, removes the aggressive odor, reduces both the number of pathogens and wild oatgrass seeds, produces gas fuel (about 1 m 3 of biogas from 1 kg of degraded organic matter) and changes the organically bound nitrogen to ammonia. The material and energy balance of a farm with 100 000 layers is counted. The balanced anaerobic treatment and drying of excrements is suggested as a mode which may solve the environmental problems of large-scale animal farms lucratively.
