El taller como escuela, el taller como fábrica. Diálogos entre la Bauhaus y el muralismo de Siqueiros

2019
In this text, we recovered Bauhaus’ history, both in Weimar and Dessau, in order to propose a connection with David Alfaro Siqueiros’ artistic program. This dialogue allows us to underline the development of one research focused on the workshop-school and workshop-factory model established by Siqueiros since the 1930s. Due to the importance of this strategy for his political-aesthetic project, the muralist readapted this model at different times during his artistic practice. Likewise, the article argues how 1919 Walter Gropius’ statutes related to the unification of the arts (painting, sculpture, architecture) expressed from his manifesto, maintained a direct connection with Siqueiros’ proposal defined in 1933 as “plastic integration”. Finally, the article set out Siqueiros’ responses to the dichotomies art and industry, art and machine – that were also substantial elements of the organization at the German school.
