Refining students’ educational performance is the crucial element of higher educational institutions and prejudiced by multifactor. Hence, it is important to evaluate the factors affecting little academic accomplishments to address the issue. The objective of this study was to assess the magnitude and factors associated with low academic performance among students at Mekelle University, College of Health Sciences, 2015. Cross-sectional study was conducted among 356 regular undergraduate students at College of Health Sciences. Self-administered questionnaire was used to collect the data. The data was entered into EPI info, version 7 and was analyzed using SPSS version 20 software. Descriptive statistics is presented using percentage and frequencies as well as the mean and standard deviation. Binary and multivariate logistic regression was done to find out the predicting factors . 43% of the study participants have low academic performance. Students who were not interested in their current fields of study were two times more likely to have a low academic performance than their counterparts (AOR= 2.01; 95% CI: 1.16, 3.45). The odd of low academic performance is about three times higher among students who use addictive substances than those who don’t use (AOR= 2.42; 95% CI: 1.19, 4.90). Large proportion of the students in the Health Science College was found to have a very low academic performance. Hence, the quality assurance office shall work on accommodating student’s filed of interest and availability of internet access.
