IT MAY be questioned whether American speakers, or at any rate speakers of General American, abhor the vacuum between vowels which goes by the name of hiatus. Possibly they fill in the 'gaps' with linking sounds like [j] and [w], in employee and hew out. So far as we know yet, they do not insert [r] in raw oysters.
