Social determinants, sexual behaviour, and sexual health

2009
© Oxford University Press, 2014. This chapter discusses the complex relationship between social determinants, sexual behaviour, and sexual health. It focuses on patterns of sexual health and behaviour in Britain in the context of changing social and economic conditions of the 20th century, and of the emergence of HIV in its closing decades. It then contrasts the contemporary impact of HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in Britain with that in low-income countries where social and economic determinants interact with behavioural and biological factors to fuel the continuing spread of HIV, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa.
