The Moving IoT

2014
Moving beyond the traditional scope of the IoT this work presents novel proposals in the field of connected objects. In this paper we identify and study the implications of having moving elements in the IoT. We successfully propose and then experimentally test a compensation mechanism for actuating objects. Such a mechanism allows the operation of moving elements over lossy links by partially hiding the network impairments from the experience. We employ probabilistic graphical models to construct a compensation mechanism that aims maintaining quality during the operation of networked actuators. Our results show that short-term compensation for network losses is feasible by incorporating knowledge about the task being executed and the characteristic of the communications channel.
