Dairy calcium in Croatian daily diet according to age

2002
In Croatia in 400 000 women osteopenia and in 200 000 osteoporosis is detected. Low calcium intake is associated with risk for osteoporosis. It is difficult to meet calcium needs without a source of milk in the diet and it is advisable that 60 % of Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for calcium is dairy calcium. The aim of this study was to determine daily intake of dairy calcium in 1220 subjects aged 8-80 years. Specially designed Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) was used. Intakes were expressed in absolute amount and in relation to RDA and Dietary Reference Intake (DRI). In average, children and adolescents had dairy calcium intake over 60 % RDA. Obviously during the life time intake of dairy calcium decreased.
