Low intensity resistance exercise attenuates the relationship between glucose and autonomic nervous system indicators during 24 hours in women with type 2 diabetes

Summary Objectives The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between glucose and heart rate variability (HRV) during 24 h after different resistance exercise (RE) intensities in women with type 2 diabetes (T2D). Equipment and methods Twelve women with T2D (55.2 ± 4.0 years; 70.1 ± 11.4 kg; 155.7 ± 3.3 cm) performed experimental sessions divided in two blocks separated by seven days and in a randomized order: block-A (session 1: control–CON40% and session 2: RE at 40% of the one repetition maximum test–1RM) and block-B (session 3: CON80% and session 4: RE at 80%1RM). The glucose and R-R interval (RRi) of HRV were evaluated during 24 h every 5 min of each experimental session by continuous glucose monitoring system (Guardian/REAL-Time) and cardiofrequencimeter Polar/RS800CX, which generated 288 measurement points for correlation. Pearson's correlation was performed among glucose and RRi values, low frequency (LF), high frequency (HF) and LF:HF ratio. Results Correlations ( P r  = −0.60, r  = 0.38, r  = −0.38, r  = 0.29, respectively) and CON80%1RM ( r  = −0.50, r  = 0.28, r  = −0.28, r  = 0.29, respectively).
