Serious hearing impairment as a consequence of extensive excision of the chronically inflamed middle ear is still very common. After the introduction of tympanoplasty in 1952 a large variety of tissues and synthetic materials have been employed to repair this acquired defect in the sound conducting system (1,2,3).
