Culture Change Movement in Nursing Homes/Person-Centered Care/Household Models

2015
In long-term care, the phrase culture change (CC) is often used interchangeably with person-centered initiatives to refer to an enhanced social model of care. Evolving from a growing concern about the oppression of traditionally institutional-based nursing home care, the goal of CC is to create a system of interdependency that enhances the quality of life of residents as well as the quality of the work environment for staff. These models include Action Pact, the Eden Alternative, Planetree, and the Wellspring Model. This type of care requires changes across several dimensions of the nursing home setting: organizational, operational, and environmental. In more highly evolved CC, organizations' core services are decentralized and the physical environment is redesigned into a household, reducing the scale of the functional areas where residents live and staff work.
