A model for simulating the expansion of mortar bar due to
alkali-silica reaction is presented. This model is based upon
the mechanisms of alkali-silica reaction proposed by S.Diamond
and experimental results. This model can be apply to the mortar
or concrete containing a reactive constituent in the aggregate
which is not readily accessible to hydroxyl ions, for example,
volcanic glass, cristobalite and tridymite in the andesite. This
model predicts correctly the pessimum content for given mortar
mix proportion with certain alkali content and the expansion of
mortar bar with time.
