Resíduos sólidos e helmintíases de caráter zoonótico: estudo de caso e ações de educação em saúde em Manguinhos, Rio de Janeiro

2017
Problems in slums date back to your training and related environmental degradation. The dispersion of solid waste attracts dogs and cats that are reservoirs of infections, especially those caused by Ancylostoma caninum and Toxocara canis, which produce the man zoonotic erratic syndromes for larva migrans. The objectives of this study were: i) to investigate the handling habits of solid waste (garbage); ii) investigate the knowledge, attitudes and practices of Manguinhos residents about zoonotic helminth infections, with emphasis on cutaneous larva migrans and iii) to assess the frequency of intestinal helminth infections in dogs and cats of the locality in order to propose hypotheses about the relationship between these three elements and designing health education strategies for prevention of these zoonosis. Qualiquantitative field surveys were conducted, regarding the topics above and a coproparasitological survey was performed in animals in Manguinhos, in Rio de Janeiro, including 123 dogs and cats. Questionnaires about knowledge, attitudes, practices and perceptions (CAPs) on these zoonosis were filled by 261 residents and socio-economic, demographic and environmental surveys were performed in 387 families. The methodology of this study is descriptive and exploratory. We also obtained data on handling of solid waste and possession of animals, stimulating the interaction between residents and the local health units, including community health workers Results about the vulnerability to acquire helminthic zoonoses and the frequencies of infection by intestinal parasites in dogs and cats are presented. The first Methodological Book was prepared on the subject. Health education have been developed in the course "Community Health: A Construction of All. An educational activity was carried out with the community health agents of the primary care health unity Germano Sinval Faria and the Family Health Clinic Victor Valla. We conclude that the studied population is vulnerable to the acquisition of zoonotic helminthiases, whose social determinants are interrelated and involve the inadequate management of solid waste, disinformation and domestic animals, with consequent environmental contamination by fecal matter. There is a need for improvement of solid waste management in Manguinhos. Health education activities and encouragement of responsible animal ownership should be implemented in the communities.
