Design of a high-performance hybrid composite

2003
The present research aimed at the development of a thin composite with a flexural strength in the range of 20 to 25 MPa. The production method was assigned by the manufacturer: it was the premix process. The reinforcement was composed of short alkali-resistant glass fibers (l = 12 mm) associated with either a mesh (120 g/m 2 ) or a mat (120 g/m 2 ). The composition of the matrix (solid constituents) was as follows: -fine sand : 43.1 % -white cement (CEM I 42.5): 43.1 % -metakaolin : 10.8 % -polymer : 3.0% The water to binder ratio was 0.30 and a super plasticizer was added to get a self-compacting product. The short fiber content was in the range of2.2 % to 3 % by weight. After casting, the composites were cured at 40°C for 3 days and tested for their flexural strength. The presence of both a mesh and a mat placed near the extreme tensile fiber increased the performance of the. composite, regardless the short fiber content.
