Unitized electrolysis propulsion and fuel cell power for selected satellite missions

1998
An integrated modular propulsion and regenerative electro-energy storage system for propulsion and power functions on board spacecraft is described. The system is based on electrolysis and fuel cell principles integrated in a single unit. With water as the working fluid for both the power and propulsion systems, a clean, safe, low cost and low weight solution for many spacecraft missions is assured. The system can be designed for stand-alone propulsion, or integrated with the power system. Representative missions for two different size spacecraft are given. Both missions show a significant weight savings when electrolysis propulsion systems are used. The weight savings are augmented when the power system is unified with the propulsion system.
