Parties and Party Systems in the Länder

Democracy in Germany is party democracy. This basic principle of democratic theory also applies to the German Lander. The chapter therefore provides a systematic overview of the tasks and developments of parties and party systems in the 16 Lander. It also examines how Land parties and Land party systems relate to the federal level.
