Surface science lettersA creation of grain boundaries by an electric field

1989
Combined field and scanning electron microscope experiments using tungsten tips show that an electric field can transform a single crystal into a polycrystal at a temperature where surface self-diffusion occurs. The formation of the polycrystal is visible in the scanning microscope by the appearance of grain boundary grooves. The phenomenon is explained by the mechanical stress induced by the electric field.
