THE ROLES OF WOMAN DURING MIGRATION:A FEMINISM APPROACH IN JOHN STEINBECKâS THE GRAPES OFWRATH

This research is a feminism approach that aimed at revealing the roles of woman during the migration. It is conducted by studying the roles of woman in The Grapes of Wrathand it is equipped the relevant data with this research. The data taken from the novel is then analyzed by using feminist literary criticism that focus on the roles of woman either in family or in society represented in the novel. This is qualitative descriptive research and thus presents the data interpretation through descriptive analysis. The material object of the research is the novel itself. The supporting data for the research are taken from books, journals, and reviews related to women�s role. To gain the aim, this study uses sociological, feminism and literary approaches. The result of the study indicates that the roles of woman in family and in the society areas themother, wife, leader and the decision maker. The representation of woman�s roles in family can be seen from the relationship between mother and father, mother and children. From those relationships, woman is potrayed as a strong wife who tries to break the patriarchal culture according to her heart.Meanwhile, the relationship between woman with other members of familiy can be known from woman�s response to the social phenomenon during migration. It is influenced by her strong desire to keep her familiy�s integrity. From this analysis, it shows two significant roles of woman represented in the novel are woman as the leader and decision maker. Therefore, although there are many problems during migration, woman be able to reveal her bravery, independence, and her responsibility.
