On the impact of enabling L3VPN in Gluon

2019
Software Defined Networking (SDN) has become the cornerstone of modern networking with a potential of alleviation of vendor lock-in. Supporting multiple SDN control planes in a single cloud can help to achieve this objective. However, this may result into an additional layer in the stack causing increased latency. In this work, we implement L3VPN service in Gluon -which has recently emerged as a potential solution for simultaneous multiple SDN controllers support. We present preliminary measurements related to OpenDaylight’s L3VPN service in the presence of Gluon. Results from empirical evaluations suggest that average virtual machine launch time with L3VPN enabled is 8 seconds and round trip time is 3 milliseconds.
